Tshwane’s TshWi-Fi.co.za Content Portal among global World Summit Award winners: Chosen as world’s best in Government and Citizen Engagement
The City of Tshwane’s goal of becoming the most connected city on the African continent is one step closer to being realised. Tshwi-Fi.co.za, the free, unlimited-access content portal available on Tshwane Free WiFi has been selected as winner in the 2016 World Summit Awards, an award initiated in the framework of the UN in an effort to help bridge the world’s digital divide.
Tshwi-fi is a collaboration between the City of Tshwane and Project Isizwe, the Free WiFi advocacy group that is working toward providing WiFi as a service to all South Africans. Together they have not only connected 2.9 million people to the internet, but they have also provided a free content platform that inspires, educates and empowers the people of Tshwane.
Tshwi-fi.co.za was born out of the belief that free WiFi needs context in order to be truly useful. In low-income communities across South Africa, especially where access to technology is limited, there remains a great need integrating and facilitating how people are brought online and allowing them to quickly begin making meaningful use of what the internet has to offer.
Tshwi-fi.co.za bridges the gap by providing content that is curated for relevancy to the user demographic, with particular focus on educational information and opportunities for skills development geared towards enabling employment.
This successful formula ensured that the platform was one of the 40 WSA winners selected from 451 nominations. The WSA brings together the very best in digital innovation from around the world and demonstrates the richness and diversity of mobile content globally, proving how mobile innovation can improve society.
The winners were selected by a Jury of international ICT experts in two democratic rounds. Each UN Member State is eligible to nominate one product per category for the World Summit Award. This way any nomination results from a national pre-selection prior to the international WSA Jury and guarantees a fair and democratic process.
Well done Tshwane! With this award you’ve once again proven your commitment to digitally empowering your citizens.
